Artist Statement
Time Is a River (2017) is a site-specific installation commissioned by the TEAF. The work speaks of the predicament regarding the irrepressibility of time by using river as an analogy. The neon sign reading “TIME IS A RIVER” reinforce the notion of the statement by its larger-than-life scale. And whether time is a river to us, it depends on our belief in the passage of time. This is not the first time which river appears in Wong’s work. Based on a traditional Chinese allegory staging at a brook, Wong created a body of work titled “Filing Down a Steel Bar Until a Needle is Made”. In the work, Wong pledge to hone a steel bar of his height and weight until he can attain a needle. This resonates with the central theme of his practice and has recently been shown at “Seoul Babel” Seoul Museum of Art and “Line of Times” Mill6 Foundation in Hong Kong.
