Artist Biography

Morgan Wong’s interest in durational performances in fact investigates the irrepressibility of time as a predicament, and in doing so trying to recuperate a new consciousness with physicality, time and space. He uses an object as a vehicle to mediate with the outside world in order to reflect on his own consciousness. Such a practice follows the vein of phenomenology, and specifically how to become more aware of the relationship between one’s volition and action. The pursuit of timelessness is not only a humanistic quest; its social and political connotations question the fundamental value of an individual as an agency for change.

Morgan Wong (b. 1984, Hong Kong), currently lives and works in Hong Kong. Previous solo shows include: Untitled – Expressway, Rolls Royce Motor Cars Showroom, Hong Kong (2015); Filing Down a Steel Bar Until a Needle is Made, Tintype Gallery, London, UK (2013); One Hour, 2P Contemporary Art Gallery, Hong Kong; Untitled – Agnosia Series I, Videotage, Hong Kong (both 2011); A Story of an Eel Chef, Oyoyo Art Center, Sapporo, Japan (2010); Once You Were Here, Para Site Central, Hong Kong (2009). Recent exhibitions were held in institutions like Oil Street Art Space, Para site, Pao Galleries, Art Basel Encounters, Pearl Lam Galleries, Hong Kong Museum of Art (Hong Kong); Shanghai 21st Century Minsheng Contemporary Art Museum, OCT Contemporary Art Terminal Shenzhen, Pace Beijing (China); Gwangju Museum of Art, Alternative Space Loop, Suwon Art Centre (Korea); Sapporo Archive Museum (Japan); Soka Art Center, Nanhai Gallery (Taiwan); Whitechapel Gallery, Tate Modern (UK); Liste Art Fair (Switzerland); Turin Palace Museum (Italy); Moscow Museum of Modern Art (Russia); Fremantle Art Centre (Australia); SESC Pompeia (Brasil).
